OUR WORK

Health, knowledge and dignity —

at every stage.

We work alongside schools, families, communities and healthcare providers in Uganda to help women and girls understand their health, access support and receive care when they need it.

Reproductive & Sexual Health Education

Knowledge gives girls choices.

Through our school-based Teen Girls Clubs and community education, Savana creates safe and supportive spaces where girls can learn about puberty, sexual and reproductive health, menstrual health, self-esteem and healthy life choices. Our weekly sessions give girls the opportunity to ask questions openly, better understand their bodies and develop the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their health without shame or stigma.

Menstrual Health & Dignity

A period should never stand between a girl and her education.

Savana provides practical menstrual-health education to help girls understand menstruation, manage their periods safely and confidently, and remain engaged in school. We also teach girls how to make reusable sanitary pads, providing a more affordable and sustainable menstrual-health option while developing practical skills and greater self-reliance. Our work also recognises that menstrual dignity requires safe, private sanitation, which is why improving access to dedicated girls' toilet and handwashing facilities is an important part of our longer-term work with schools.

 Counselling, Safety & Support

A safe place to be heard.

Health challenges do not exist in isolation. Some of the girls and women Savana works with are navigating teenage pregnancy, abuse, family difficulties and emotional distress alongside their health needs. Through confidential counselling and ongoing support, including dedicated support for teen mothers, our team provides safe spaces where girls and women can speak openly, receive health education and guidance, rebuild their confidence and, where necessary, be connected with further medical or protective support.

Healthcare Access & Referrals

From information to care.

Education can help a girl recognise when something may be wrong, but information alone is not enough. Where girls need medical attention, Savana helps connect them with appropriate healthcare services for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care. This allows our work to go beyond health education and help girls access the care they need when a health concern is identified.

Women & Communities

Our work goes beyond the classroom.

Savana's work extends beyond girls in schools because women's health is also shaped by families, communities and the environments in which women live. Through our Women's Health Clubs, we provide practical education covering areas including family planning, birth spacing, maternal health, breast health, cervical cancer awareness, nutrition and disease prevention. Our Community Health Talks also bring together parents, teachers and other community members to discuss issues affecting women and girls and encourage healthier, safer and more supportive communities.

Healthier women. Healthier futures.

Every programme starts with the same belief: women and girls deserve the knowledge, support and healthcare they need to live healthy and dignified lives.
